Although ACRE does not have it's own facility to house rats that are in need, we have always made it a point be there assist those animals as best we can. So this page is dedicated to re-homing or placing rats in the community, that really need our help. We only post rats that are at a distance that Colorado can help with.
This page is not intended to be an advertisement for breeders who have litters, rather a page for the rescues or rats that no longer have a home due to family circumstance. Please do not go out and adopt every rat you see that is
potential snake food so that they can be re-homed here. Do not go find
rats in shelters to post here, do not ask to post about rats on the
craigslist or other internet sites where you find rats posted. All rats
posted here are in your home, rats you took in that need a home because of a bad situation or because they no longer have a home.
Mind you, you are the one caring for the rats in need until they find a
home, we cannot help you with a place to keep them while they are waiting for a home. We are just here to get the word out about them when the need
does arise. ACRE cannot keep up with every feeder rat out there that
needs a home, but we do realize that a few will need us. All such rats will be posted here.
Please be mindful that if you have rats that you are considering listing here, if they are breeder bred rats, please contact that breeder as it is a courtesy to have them re-home their own stock. Most breeders have a policy that you must return their rats to them should you no longer be able to keep them. If you have contacted your breeder and they cannot take your pets back feel free to contact us about listing them here. Just let us know the situation.
If you are not in the Colorado area and have rats who need help or if you see rats in need on the internet sites, please feel free to post about those on our main forum. We realize these rats need a fair chance at life, we just can't keep up with all of them on this page.
Black male rat needing a home

Please contact the club if you can help. This was a breeder bred rat but the breeder will not help this person with the rat.
Hi All (and thanks Amy for the help!) We are hoping to find a new home for one of our rats. We are in Colorado Springs. I just uploaded some pictures of our black rat for you to see (hope I did it right)under the photo section. His name is Wonka (the other half of Willy (our blue)). He was born Oct. 30 2007. He is all black (black self?). We have never had any health problems with him. He was a Christmas present last year for our son. Both or our kids have special needs, and since I had rats in the past, I knew they would be great therapy! We have really enjoyed them, but Wonka has been skittish from the start, and, for lack of better word, sort of neurotic...we call him the worrier. These rats are family pets, but were specifically purchased for our son who has Aspergers (high functioning autism). The rat cage is in the family room, and these rats have always been held and taken out with supervision. So I am absolutely certain that our rats have never been treated roughly or in an unkind manner while here at our home. Wonka is just too rough in the sense that he claws to get into "hiding spots" under your collar etc. He has also nipped at ears, noses, and toes on occasion. I have also noticed that our sweet American Blue has bites on his back as well. Our son has begun to develop anxiety over holding the rats (even our blue at this point). I hate to see us going in this direction, since he has just LOVED taking care of them. I am really hoping we can find a good home for Wonka soon, before we get further into a pattern of anxiety. If anyone is interested in taking Wonka, please let me know. We could meet some place that would not be to far from the Springs if that would help. I think he could be a good match for someone....just not us at this point. He does have some really nice qualities, and I am hoping someone will give him a chance. Thanks for reading!
